Abstract

Parallel to the improvements in marble technology in the recent years, the research on marble abrasion -polishing issue, which is the one of the most important step in marble mining, is studied intensively in recent years. These studies are generally carried out on the development of optimum abrasion - polishing heads. The design of optimum abrasion heads are directly related to the correct and precise measurement of surface roughness. The available surface roughness measurement devices measure the roughness profile in 2-D with a narrow sampling length (approximately<3 cm). The ideal measuring system should have to be in 3-D (for the surface roughness map) and must cover the whole marble surfaces(e.g. 30x30 cm). On the other hand the quality of polished marble surfaces (end product) is determined by human expert observations and experiences; due to this it is a naturally relative phenomenon that is dependable to an expert decisions. This study is the design of 3-D surface roughness measuring system which is the first step of 3-D mapping of surface and it will be the base for the manufacturing of a measurement system for the polished marble surface.
