Abstract

Psychological flexibility can be defined as a key concept for the individual to live and lead a meaningful life for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, one of the last generation cognitive behavioural therapies. Six components of psychological flexibility are the individual’s taking values as a guide, cognitive defusion, focusing on the present moment, acceptance in line with values, self as a context and action for a valuable life. According to acceptance and commitment therapy, there are many techniques that can be used in psychological help relationship. This study discussed the bibliotherapy technique, which is based on bringing together reading materials addressing the difficulty experienced by the client in developing insight to dysfunctional attitudes. For this purpose, Paulo Coelho’s “Alchemist” was examined from the perspective of acceptance and commitment therapy for bibliotherapy and evaluated in detail with the quotations made within the context of six components of psychological flexibility. In conclusion, this study emphasizes that the novel Alchemist can be useful for bibliotherapy practice in order to help the client to develop insight to analyse the difficulties s/he has experienced.
