Abstract

Mehmed Ali Paşa's Rebellion in Egypt can be regarded as one of the biggest problems of the Ottoman Empire faced in the 19th century. The main inspiration for the Mehmed Ali Mu-tiny can be said to be the creation of an independent Egypt. After his rebellion in the first half of the century, the idea of an independent Egypt was transferred to his successors. Dur-ing the reign of Mehmed Ali's grandson, Khedive İsmail, the holy ideal of a free Egypt was strongly revived. The Sublime Porte tried to prevent İsmail's efforts for independence during the Tanzimat Period. That is to say, the competition between Khedive and the Sublime Porte gradually turned into a strug-gle testing the power and limits of the Sublime Porte. This struggle for power proved that the Sublime Porte was the main actor in Ottoman politics. The fact that the Egyptian Question, which used to be controlled by the Palace in the first half of the 19th century, was now being handled by the Porte itself strongly indicated that the center of power during the Tanzimat Era had shifted from the Palace to the Porte.
