Abstract

Research on lichens, one of the important biological richness of our country, is gradually increasing. About 2000 lichen species recorded from almost all provinces close to the date have been published as lichen list of Turkey. Lichen publications in Turkey include numerous systematic-floristic surveys, as well as researches carried out for different purposes such as chemical and ecological. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the province of Istanbul, which has a very rich biodiversity due to its nature and location, in terms of lichen variety and to provide preliminary knowledge for future studies. The information compiled by examining the written sources until today about lichens that naturally spread in Istanbul, one of the leading cosmopolitan metropolises of the world, was presented as spatial and numerical data. Accordingly, the first lichen study from Istanbul was carried out in 1852, and restarted many years later with our master thesis study on the lichens of Istanbul Islands. The total number of publications on all subjects related to Istanbul lichens has been 36 and lichen species records have been around 1000 to date. It is of great importance that the sustainability of lichen data existing in Istanbul, which is exposed to negative environmental factors every day due to global climate change, air pollution and population growth.
