Abstract

The flow around an immersed cylinder is widely encountered in engineering practices such as pipelines, offshore and coastal structures. The determination of hydrodynamic forces exerted on such structures and the response of them against these forces are important for design considerations. The velocity field is the most important information in determining the structure and pressure field of flow which interacts with a cylindrical body. In this study, the velocity field of flow around a horizontal circular cylinder is investigated both experimentally and theoretically for the gap ratio G/D=0.2 and flow condition of $Re_D$=9500. PIV technique is used to measure the flow velocities. ANSYS program package based on finite element method is used to solve the governing equations for the velocities. The numerical simulations are carried out using k-$\varepsilon$, k-$\omega$ and SST turbulence models. The numerical results obtained from different turbulent models are compared with the experimental velocities, and SST turbulence model is found relatively better in simulation the flow field.
