Abstract

Transportation of suspended sediment in the river changes according to the base slope, topography and flow discharge of the river, time and regional climate conditions. Estimation of suspended sediment yield accurately has a big importance in hydraulic engineering and design of water resources projects and management. In this study, various models developed based on artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict sediment concentration in the river. Daily flow and suspended sediment concentration data of the Rio Valenciano Station operated by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) were used as case study. Different input combinations tested to predict daily suspended sediment concentration dependent on daily flows and former daily flows and suspended sediment concentrations. The best ANN model is obtained with the help of this input combination. Than the test results of the ANN models were compared with the multi linear regression and sediment rating curve.
