Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of amyloidosis on coronary arteries with evaluation of coronary artery calcium score with computed tomography. Material and Methods: This prospective study involved 20 secondary amyloidosis subjects that diagnosed with renal biopsy and 20 healthy subjects as control group. The patients with coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, hyperlipidemia, obesity were excluded. Coronary artery calcium scoring was performed to the patient and control groups with Toshiba Aquilion 16 detector multislice computed tomography. Results: The mean coronary artery calcium score was 16.05 ± 10.4 in the amyloidosis group and 6.4 ± 4.36 in the control group. The statistical difference between the two groups was not significant (p = 0.739). No significant difference was found between the groups in terms of age, gender, smoking and alcohol use. The difference between blood albumin and total calcium levels and urine protein / creatinine were significant (p <0.05). The mean body mass index was 25.1 ± 0.64 in the patient group and 22.26 ± 0.71 in the control group (p = 0.005). Conclusion: Coronary artery calcium scoring should not be the first radiologic diagnostic test to determine the risk of coronary artery disease in amyloidosis.
