Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the demographic characteristics and surgical results of the strabismus cases who underwent superior oblique surgery as a first procedure. Material and Method: Retrospectively 62 patients who were applied upper oblique surgery as a first procedure between 2010-2018 were included in the study. The demographic features and etiologies of the cases at the time of admission were recorded. Complete ophthalmological examinations of the cases were performed before surgery. Patients were grouped according to their diagnosis. Upper oblique muscle function was assessed by grading underaction between -1 and -4 and overaction between +1 and +4. As a weakening procedure tenectomy and tenotomy; as a strengthening procedure tucking and modified Harada-Ito procedure were applied. Upper oblique muscle function was compared statistically in preoperative and 12th month postoperative controls (Wilcoxon test). Results: Eighty-five eyes of 62 cases were included in the study. There were Brown Syndrome in 31 (50%) patients, trochlear nerve palsy in 12 (19.3%) patients, A pattern exotropia in 10 (16.1%) patients, extraocular muscle fibrosis in 9 (14.6%) patients. The most common surgery was upper oblique tenotomy in 49 (57.6%) cases. In the 12th month postoperative follow-up examinations, there was a statistically significant difference in upper oblique function in all groups compared to preoperative examinations (p <0.05). Conclusion: In cases of strabismus due to upper oblique muscle dysfunction the first surgery to perform upper oblique surgery is effective in correcting the shift.
