Abstract

This study aims to interpret Turgut Özal as an object of nostalgia due to his unique situation between “old” and “new” Turkey. Although Özal’s personality and policies are defined as a predecessor of the Justice and Development Party and its vision on current political issues, different narratives and approaches can be observed which also become part of opposing discourses against the JDP rule. Nostalgia does not only constitute the general framework of alternative assessments of Özal and the 1980s in Turkey but also carries out a key role for a comparative analysis of old and new Turkeys. Interpreting Özal as a nostalgic figure in the public sphere and popular culture rather than a former politician, this study extends the literature on Turkish politics and nostalgia through its emphasis on “the politics of nostalgia”, “the nostalgia of politics”, “pop nostalgia” and the relationship between new media and memory.
