Abstract

The current research was undertaken with the aim of predicting the effect of the 3rd and 4th grade gifted and talented students’ perfectionism levels on their mathematics anxiety. The study sample consisted of 121 3rd and 4th grade gifted and talented students who were attending two different private primary schools for gifted and talented students in İstanbul during the 2017-2018 academic year, spring term. Data was collected through Mathematics Anxiety Scale for Elementary Students (Bindak, 2005), and Adaptive-Maladaptive Perfectionism Scale (AMPS), which was adapted into Turkish by Baş (2010). In line with the aim of the study, the Pearson correlation coefficient was estimated and linear regression analysis was conducted. The findings reveal that two sub-dimensions of perfectionism, Sensitivity to Mistakes and Contingent Self Esteem are significant predictors of mathematics anxiety. These independent variables, in the aggregate, predicts 29% of mathematics anxiety, the dependent variable.

Özet

Bu araştırma, üstün yetenekli ilkokul 3. ve 4. sınıf öğrencilerinin mükemmeliyetçilik düzeylerinin, matematik kaygısını yordama gücünü incelemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu İstanbul’da üstün yeteneklilere yönelik eğitim veren iki özel eğitim kurumunun 3. ve 4. sınıfında 2017-2018 bahar yarıyılında öğrenim gören 121 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Verilerin toplanmasında, öğrencilerin matematiğe yönelik kaygı düzeylerini belirlemek amacıyla geliştirilen Matematik Kaygısı Ölçeği (Bindak, 2005) ve mükemmeliyetçilik düzeylerini belirlemek amacıyla Baş (2010) tarafından Türkçeye uyarlanan Uyumlu-Uyumsuz Mükemmeliyetçilik Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın amacı doğrultusunda, Pearson korelasyon katsayısı hesaplanmış ve doğrusal regresyon analizi yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonunda, mükemmeliyetçilik alt boyutlarından hatalara duyarlılık ve şartlı benlik saygısının matematik kaygısının anlamlı birer yordayıcısı olduğu belirlenmiştir. Söz konusu bağımsız değişkenler, birlikte, bağımlı değişken olan matematik kaygısı üzerindeki değişkenliğin %29’unu açıklamaktadır.
