Abstract

Barley and Kunda (1992) argued that the managerial discourses which have emerged in the period after 1980, under the organizational culture title, are means of normative control. On the other hand, it is argued that organizational culture, while taking a critical stand against the managerialist perspective is in essence subsequently, instrumentalized. Postmodern turn discourse has been discussed in management and organization literature in the same period as well. The characteristics of recent developments which have been observed in management and organization approaches have been discussed by different postmodernist approaches. While the skeptical explanation of postmodernism has examined those developments with a perspective including awareness and emancipation against the managerial control, the affirmative explanation of postmodernism has examined them affirmatively with a periodical perspective. The study discusses the argument about whether organizational culture which has transformed from a critical position to a managerial control instrument is also acceptable for postmodernism discourse in the developments in the human resources management field, in which the new management and organization approaches frequently emerge.
