Abstract

Introduction: The incidence of cases with button cell ingestion in children has been increasing due to the wide usage of button-cells in electronic toys recently. In a case admitted with acute abdomen, Meckel’s diverticulum perforation was found due to foreign body in diverticulum. Since a buttoncell was found in the diverticulum the case was presented to draw attention to this rarity. Case Report: A 2-year-old boy was admitted to our clinic with abdominal pain and vomiting lasting for two days. Plain abdominal x-ray showed an disk shaped opacity suggesting button-cell in left lower abdominal quadrant. However, there was no history about button-cell ingestion. Surgical exploration conducted for acute abdomen, and a perforated Meckel’s diverticulum due to foreign body was found. Further exploration was revealed a button-cell, 1 x 0.6 cm in size, and a plastic bead in diverticulum. Resection and anastomosis was performed and he discharged home without any problem at 7th postoperative day. Conclusion: Meckel’s diverticulum perforation after diverticulitis has been frequently reported in literature, however Meckel’s diverticulum perforation due to foreing bodies, especially due to button-cell’s is rather rare. Ingested foreign bodies are expected to be passed with stoll within 2-3 days after ingestion. However it should be kept in mind that foreign bodies can be trapped in diverticulum in the presence of Meckel’s diverticulum.
