Abstract

Introduction: Cervical cancer is a major health problem in the world. In the early diagnosis and prevention of cervical cancer, it is important to identify the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection and HPV types. In our study, we aimed to identify the most common types of HPV and to investigate the superiority of conventional smear, HPV-DNA and Co-test scanning on these types. Material and Methods: A total of 55 patients, whose HPVDNA test and colposcopic biopsy and smear results were present, applied to our hospital between September 2015 and July 2017, were included in the study. Results; High-risk HPV (80%) was observed in 44 of the patients, low-risk HPV in 4 patients (7.2%) and HPV test in 7 patients (12.3%). Twenty-four patients were negative (Intraepithelial lesion or malignancy negative, ILMAN) and 31 patients were positive (ASCUS and others) when cytology results were evaluated. In histopathological examinations; 25 patients were negative, 16 patients were CIN I, 13 patients were CIN II-III, and 1 patient was squamous cell carcinoma. There was a statistically significant correlation between cytological diagnosis results and HPV types (p = 0,0119). HPV-DNA and Co-test sensitivities were higher than conventional smear scannings, but when compared with conventional smear scannings, HPV-DNA and Co-test were significantly higher when sensitivity and specificity were considered (p = 0,0211). Conclusions; As a result, considering the sensitivity and specificity of conventional smear, HPV-DNA and Co-test in our study, screening with the conventional smear test is preliminary because Co-test and HPV-DNA tests have low specificity if they are highly sensitive.
