Abstract

Introduction: Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) to refers to how social, psychological, functional factors and problems affect the well -being of people in the oral region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the OHRQoL of patients who applied to the Van Yuzuncu Yil University Department of Periodontology by using the oral health impact profile (OHIP-14) scale and to determine the relationship of OHIP-14 scores with periodontal clinical parameters. Methods: A total of 120 patients were included in this study. In addition to asking questions about sociodemographic characteristics, smoking, oral hygiene habits, systemic conditions, it is wanted to give a personal oral hygiene score between 0 and 10 from patients. In order to measure the OHRQoL, the Turkish version of the OHIP- 14 questionnaire was used. The obtained data were evaluated statistically. Results: The total OHIP-14 scores of 55 female and 65 male patients participating in this study were calculated as 20.14 ± 0.56. The average personal oral hygiene scores of the patients was calculated as 6.45. It has been determined that there is only a positive strong correlation between plaque index and gingival index and total OHIP- 14 scores from periodontal clinical parameters. Patients stated that they had the most frequent problem of physiological limitation in OHIP-14 questions. Conclusion: This study supports the fact that poor oral hygiene habits directly affect the quality of life. The results suggest that it is necessary for the community to be more informed about the impact of periodontal disease on quality of life. In order to assess the relationship between OHRQoL and periodontal status, more studies are needed.
