Abstract

Introduction: The aim of the study is to investigate our results with ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) in 121 children with renal and ureteral stones. Materials and Methods: In last four years, 121 children (125 reno-ureteral units, RUU) with renal or ureteral calculi were treated with ESWL at our department. There were 39 girls and 82 boys. The patients’ ages ranged between 1-14 (mean 7.9) years. Stones were localized in calyx (n=75), renal pelvis (n=32) (Stone size 0.8-3.0 (mean 2.2) cm), and ureter (15 upper or mid-ureteral, 3 lower ureteral) (stone size 0.4-1 (0.8) cm). All procedures were performed under general anesthesia or sedation via ketamin or fentanyl. Maximal 2500 shocks and a mean of 16.5 kV energy with a PCK lithotripter (Istanbul, Turkey) were used in each session. Stones smaller than <4 mm were accepted as a clinical in-significant residual fragments (CIRF’s). We carried out plain abdominal film of kidneys, ureters and bladder (KUB) on 1st day, and excretory urography on 1st month after the procedure. Results: While the complete stone-free rate for kidney stones was 71.9%, CIRFs were observed in 12 RUU (11.2%). Clinically significant residual stones were observed in 10 RUU (9.4%) and remaining 8 (7.4%) RUU were unsuccessful. While 13 RUU (72.2%) with ureteral stones have been stone free, 5 (27.8%) were unsuccessful. Conclusion: As a minimally invasive method, ESWL was found to be safe and effective in the treatment of childhood urinary stone disease
