Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two different prophylactic schemes for prevention to infectious complications after transrectal prostate biopsy. Materials and Methods: Between September 2004 and December 2006, a total of 244 patients, who underwent prostate biopsy due to elevated PSA and/or suspicious finding in rectal examination, were included in this study. While ciprofloxacin plus ornidazole was given in the first 104 patients (Group 1); ceftriaxone plus ornidazole were given in the remaining 140 patients (Group 2) for prophylaxis. Results: A total of 19 infectious complications were found (14 in group 1 and 5 in group 2). Number of infectious complications in group 1 was found higher than group 2 (p=0.02). However, there was no statistically significant difference found between two groups in other complications (p>0.05). Conclusion: On the light of our findings, ceftriaxone plus ornidazole scheme is more effective in prevention of infectious complications after prostate biopsy when compared to ciprofloxacin plus ornidazole scheme.

Toplam 19 infeksiyöz istenmeyen yan etki bulundu (14 grup 1, 5 grup 2). Grup 1’deki infeksiyöz istenmeyen yan etkilerin sayısı grup 2’den yüksek olmuştur (p=0.02). Buna karşın iki grup arasında diğer istenmeyen yan etkiler açısından anlamlı farklılık bulunmamıştır (p>0.05). Elde ettiğimiz bulgular ışığında, seftriakson+ornidazol rejimi siprofloksasin+ornidazol rejimi ile karşılaştırıldığında, prostat biyopsisi sonrası infeksiyöz istenmeyen yan etkileri önlemede daha etkilidir.
