Abstract

Karaism is an anti-Talmudist movement which was born in Iraq in the VIII. century C.E. The greatest difference between this movement and mainstream Rabbinic Judaism is that it regards Tanakh as the sole source of religious rules and is the opposite of Talmud. At present, there are Karaite population reaching a certain number in North America, Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, Turkey and especially in Israel. Among them, Israel comes to the forefront with the largest population of Karaites. In this study, the situation of the Egyptian-born Karaites who emigrated from Egypt in the 20th century and constitute the majority of the Karaites living in present-day Israeli state will be discussed basically. In the first chapter, general information about Karaism will be given. In the second part, the Karaites’s migration to Israel, the events encountered in that migration process and the existing relations with the state and society after the migration will be examined. The study will conclude with a general evaluation.
