Abstract

Lung cancer is the most common cause, accounting for 40-60% of all brain metastasis. Brain metastasis represent a significant cause morbidity and mortality in the patients with lung cancer. In this study, it was aimed to analyse the lung cancer patients with brain metastasis retrospectively. Fourty-four lung cancer patients with brain metastasis were included the study. Demographic and clinical characteristics, therapeutic methods and survival were evaluated. Effects of clinical characteristics on prognosis were investigated. Median age was 54 (range 39 to 72) years and 5 (11.4%) patients were women. Twenty-two (50%) patients were smallcell lung cancer and 23 (52.27%) patients had multiple brain metastasis. The mean survival time and 1 year survival rate of 33 patients were 7.0 ± 1.24 months and 18.46% respectively. Good performance status, symptom free, soliter brain metastasis, non-small cell lung cancer related with good prognosis, but only performance status was statisticaly significant (performance status; ECOG 0-1: 8.43 ± 1.72 and ECOC 2-4: 3.4 ± 0.56 month, p= 0.02). In spite of the patients number were small in the different treatment groups, the best survival time was documented in the groups of combination therapy with surgery (20.3 months). In conclusion, it is thought that performance status is the most important prognostic factor and prospective randomized trials related with treatment strategy of the patients with brain metastasis in different pathological types are needed.

Hastaların ortanca yaşı 54 (39-72) yıl olup, 5 (%11.4)'i kadındı.
