Abstract

In this study 28 cases of spontaneous pneumothorax were reviewed, aged between 1 7 and 68 (38 ± 1 7.7) years, between 1990-1998 in Izmir Dr. Suat Seren Thoracic Diseases and Surgery Training and Research Hospital, 2nd Thoracic Surgery Department. Prolonged air leak and recurrent pneumothorax were the main indications for the operative procedure. Male to female ratio was 13/1. Patients were evaluated according to the age, gender, localization, size, etiology of pneumothorax, and time required for tube thoracostomy, indications for the operation, operative procedures, postoperative drainage interval and complications retrospectively. The mainstay of the operative procedure is, bullae bleb resection plus parietal pleurectomy via auscultation triangle route. We had no perioperative and postoperative early mortality. Overall complication rate was 35.7%. Prolonged air leak 28.7%, failure of expansion 3.5% and pneumonia 3.5% were the major complications. Average hospital stay was 24 ± 7.5 (12-43) days. No recurrence was noted. In the postoperative follow-up period which was 47 ± 34 (5-112) months. Consequently; having no recurrence confirmed, the operative procedure the most efficient way of treatment in the proper cases.

Bunların %28.7'si uzamış hava kaçağı, %3.5'i ekspansiyon kusuru, %3.5'i ise pnömoni idi. Ortalama hastanede kalış süresi 24 ± 7.5 (12-43) gün olarak saptandı. Ortalama takip süresi 47 ± 34 (5-112) ay olan olgularımızda nükse rastlanmadı. Sonuçta; nüksün gözlenmemesi, endikasyona uygun spontan pnömotoraks olgularında, operatif tedaviyi en etkin tedavi yöntemi olarak ortaya koymaktadır.
