Abstract

The release of inflammatory mediators are prominence in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aim of this study was to compare the plasma fibrinogen and serum CRP levels in acute exacerbations and stable period of COPD. Fity-six patients, 46 men and 10 women, with mean age 63.5 ±10.18 (mean ± standard deviation) years, who were hospitalised as COPD acute exacerbations, were included in the study. Plasma fibrinogen and serum CRP levels were measured. And in 39 patients, who were chosen from the same patient population, all the measurements were repeated in the stable period. With the exclusion of other causes of high serum CRP levels, we found CRP levels as 26:54 ± 4.22 mg/L in acute exacerbations and as 6.075 ± 5.61 mg/L in stable period; the difference was found to be statistically significant (p= 0.0001). The fibrinogen level was found as 5.13 ± 2.56 g/L in acute exacerbations and as 4.29 ± 1.66 g/L in stable period, the difference was found to be statistically significant (p= 0.0001). These results support the idea that fibrinogen and serum CRP are the important signs of local inflammation. As a result of this study, we concluded that CRP could be used as the earlier determinant of inflammation in COPD acute exacerbations.
