Abstract

In this study, a new discussion of van der Waals theory related to the continuity of gaseous and liquid states of matter is presented. In a one dimensional fluid model where the pair interaction potential between the molecules consist of a repulsive hard core and an exponential attraction, the calculation of the exactly determined partition function in the thermodynamic limit is reviewed and further discussed. Later, in the van der Waals limit when the range of the attractive force goes to infinity while its strength becomes proportionally weaker, a phase transition appears which is described exactyl by the van der Waals equation and the Maxwell equal-area rule. Obtained results are compared with the three-dimensional case.
