Abstract

Hydrocarbons include a wide range of chemical substances found in thousands of commercial products. Hydrocarbon poisoning is among serious children intoxications. The most dangerous consequence of acute hydrocarbon ingestion is aspiration and resulting pneumonitis. In Dr. Behçet Uz Children's Hospital the medical records of all children admitted for hydrocarbon poisoning from March 2003 to February 2004 are reviewed retrospectively. The demographics, incidence, symptoms, signs, sequele and mortality of hydrocarbon poisoning in admitted children are investigated. Of the 66 children, 65.2% were boys and 34.8% were girls, with ages ranging from 1year to 11 years (median 3.4+2.2 years). The largest group of patients was admitted during the summer months. Thirty-three children were asymptomatic at the time of the initial evaluation. The main symptom was vomiting. Seventeen of the 66 children (25.8%) had chemical pneumonia. None of the patients showed signs of nonpulmonary toxic effects of hydrocarbon compounds. All children in our study group survived without sequele.

Nonpulmoner toksik etkiler izlenmedi. Hidrokarbon zehirlenmelerine bağlı aspirasyon pnömonisi riskine dikkat çekmek amacıyla bu çalışma planlanmıştır.
