Abstract

Objectives To detect of the history findings encountered frequently in patients presenting with snoring and to emphasize of the important points raleated to Obstructive Sleep Apnea syndrome (OSAS) before physical examination. Patients and methods The history knowledges in the snoring inquiry form of 218 cases filled by the physician were evaluated retrospectively. According to the history findings the cases were divided as the group who have apnea-hypopnea story and the group who have only snoring story. These groups were compared as statistically. Results The apnea-hypopnea group consisted of 132 cases (60,6%), the group who have only snoring consisted of 86 cases( 39,4%). We found to be increased the findings such as the visual analog scale about the snoring intensity, waking-up oneself for the high sound of snoring, disturbing to the bed-mate, waking up from sleeping as if suffocating, changing the position very frequently in sleeping, sleeping in daytime and the scattering of attention in the apnea-hypopnea group. Conclusion On the issue of OSAS hasn't been found yet a method as effective as polysomnography (PSG) but that is cheaper and more practical.Because of that the patients and their relatives not to give generally a clear and reliable knowledge about sleep apnea, it is very important to select the appropriate patients for polysomnography by evaluating carefully the signs of daytime and sleeping time and the findings of physical examination together. Our opinion is supported by that at least two of the symptoms mentioned above to be present often or at the level as usual seen. In 16 patients whose polisomnographic reports were invastigated.
