Abstract

Objective: This immunohistochemical study was designed to investigate the differences between nasal polyposis (NP) and antrochoanal polyposis (ACP) in terms of epithelial cell proliferation and apoptosis inhibition. Patients and Methods: Charts of the patients who had been treated surgically with diagnoses of NP or ACP during a four-year period were examined. Twenty patients with NP (5 females, 15 males; mean age 41 years; range 17-67 years) and 20 patients with ACP (10 females, 10 males; mean age 26 years; range 9-67 years) were randomly selected from among the patients who met the inclusion criteria. Tissue sections were prepared for immunohistochemical examination from the archived paraffin-embedded surgical specimens to determine PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) and bcl-2 expressions. Statistical analyses were made using the Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: The mean PCNA index was found to be significantly higher in NP tissues (17.3±8.7) than in ACP (9.3±8.5) tissues (p=0.003). There was no significant difference between the two groups with respect to bcl-2 expression (NP, 4.8±4.3; AKP1 9.6+11.2; p=0.289). Conclusion: Nasal polyposis and ACP seem to be different clinical entities in terms of epithelial cell proliferation.
