Abstract

Objectives: To determine the demographic and clinical characteristics of, patients with antrochoanal polyps and to evaluate the treatment modalities. Patients and Methods: Twenty-seven patients (11 males, 16 females; mean age 24 years; range 5 to 67 years) who underwent surgery for antrochoanal polyps were retrospectively evaluated. The mean follow-up period was 32 months (range 13 to 55 months). Results: Concomitant sinonasal pathologies were detected in eight patients. Surgical procedures included endoscopic transnasal polypectomy and middle meatal antrostomy in seven patients (26%); endoscopic transnasal polypectomy, middle meatal antrostomy, and maxillary sinuscopy in nine patients (33%), and endoscopic transnasal polipectomy, middle meatal antrostomy, and Caldwell-Luc operation in 11 patients (41%). Recurrence was encountered in two patients with the first procedure, and in two patients in the other two procedures, respectively. Conclusion: Endoscopic surgery provides successful removal of both the antral and choanal parts, preservation of healthy mucosa, and the chance to treat additional sinonasal pathologies.
