Abstract

Objectives: The study aims to assess the effectiveness of group counseling for families of intellectually disabled children. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test/post-test design. The study was conducted in Niğde Saruhan School of Special Education. The data was collected using the Family Assessment Device, Multidi- mensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Problem Solving Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. For each one of the parents in groups of 5-6 people, 6 structured group counseling sessions were made that each lasted 45 minutes. To evaluate the data, a simple paired t-test, Wilcoxon test, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U-tests were used. Results: Parents surveyed after the group process showed a significant increase in their problem solving skills, communication with family members, social support awareness and a reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, determination of the problems parents with intellectually disabled children deal with and their psychosocial support is important.
