Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the correlation between the features of optical coherence tomography and fluorescein angiography in clinically significant diabetic macular edema. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study involved 70 eyes of 41 patients with clinically significant diabetic macular edema. FA features were categorized into focal leakage, diffuse leakage and diffuse cystoid leakage group. The OCT features were categorized into five types: type 1, sponge like retinal swelling and reduced intraretinal reflectivity; type 2, cystoid macular edema; type 3a, sponge like retinal swelling with serous retinal detachment; type 3b, cystoid macular edema with serous retinal detachment; type 4, vitreomacular surface pathologies with macular edema. The correlation between FA groubs and OCT types were analyzed, and their associations with visual acuity and central macular thickness were evaluated. Results: The distribution of OCT types in FA groubs showed a significant difference (p<0.01). Eyes with focal leakage were likely to have OCT type 1, whereas eyes with diffuse cystoid leakage were more likely to have OCT type 2, type 3b and type 4. Eyes with focal leakage and with OCT type 1 had the best visual acuity and the least degree of central macular thickening (p<0.01). There was a significant correlation between the best corrected visual acuity and central macular thickness. (p<0.01). Conclusion: There was a significant correlation between the features of OCT and FA in clinically significant diabetic macular edema.
