Abstract

The aim of the study is to investigate whether lumbar spine bone mineral density measurements in the anteroposterior plane are greater than lateral plane measurements in the spondylotic spines and to determine the effect of lumbar osteophyte scores on these measurements- 50 postmenopausal women (mean age: 59.5) with spinal osteoarthritis (OA) had undergone standardised lumbar spine radiography. Vertebral osteophytes was assessed using the method of Lane et al. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured in the AP and lateral planes using Dual photon X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The mean AP BMD (0.86 gr/cm2) was significantly higher than the lateral BMD (0.57 gr/cm2)(p<0.05). There was a positive correlation between osteophyte scores and AP BMD (p<0.05, r=0.45). Lateral BMD was not associated with the increasing osteophyte score (p>0.05, r=0.I2). In conclusion, lumbar spine OA increases AP BMD measurements but lateral BMD measurements are not affected by lumbar spine OA.
