Abstract

This study was performed to evaluate the relationship between disease activity and osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients by comparing the biochemical parameters of bone metabolism and disease activity. 40 RA patients were included in the study. Urinary Ca and HP were used as parameters of bone resorption, sAP level was used as bone formation parameter. Patients who had ESR a 28 mm/h and Ritchie articular index (RAİ) RAI28 were accepted as active. Bone metabolism was investigated in both groups with active and inactive disease. Urinary Ca and HP excreation and sAP level was higher in the active group when compared with the inactive group. In patients with active RA the increase in bone resorption parameters were higher when compared with bone formation parameter. These results support the relationship between disease activity and bone metabolism and show that bone resorption is higher than bone formation in periods of disease activity. Finally we may conclude that prolonged disease activity is one of the major causes of osteoporosis that is seen in RA and expected to decrease when the disease activity is supressed, administration of disease modifying drugs should not be delayed.
