Abstract

The rehabilitation of hemiplegic patients is often prolonged by the problem of painful shoulder. The specific etiology of this problem is controversial and treatment does not always produce the desired results. In this study, periarticular shoulder injection and suprascapular nerve block were performed to treat shoulder pain in 43 hemiplegic patients. We used local anesthetic agents in both injections. Group 1 included 20 patients who received suprascapular nerve blocks and group 2 included 23 patients who received periarticular injections. We compared the two groups regarding the improvement in passive range of abduction, flex cm and external rotation movements and pain relief. Suprascapular nerve block showed significant benefits in terms of pain relief and range of movement when compared to the periarticular shoulder injection.
