Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy and to evaluate OCT and fundus autofluorescence changes. Materials and Methods: Six eyes of six patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy which did not respond to classic treatment modalities were included. Patients underwent complete ophthalmic examination and macular OCT scans were taken. Fluorescein and indocyanine green angiographies and fundus autofluorescence images were obtained by Heidelberg Retinal Angiography 2 (HRA2). Photodynamic therapy was performed according to the standart protocol and on the site of undetermined source of leakage area and submacular fluid. Patients were followedup at one and three months after PDT and with three month intervals after then by OCT and fundus autofluorescence images. Follow-up period ranged between 3 to 9 months (mean : 5.3 months). Results: Submacular fluid disappeared one month after PDT and there was no recurrence during the follow-up. Visual acuity increased two or more lines in four eyes and did not change in two eyes. Different autofluorescnce patterns were observed in all eyes in accordance with submacular fluid absorption, but fluorescein angiograms remained unchanged. During the follow-up, re-treatment was not needed because there was no fluid collection. Conclusion: Indocyanine green guided PDT in the treament of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy results with improvement of vision. Fundus autofluorescence may be an additional tool for monitoring the functional status of retinal pigment epithelium as well as OCT and fundus fluorescein angiography
