Abstract

İmpairment of inner and outer blood-retina barriers in diabetes results in macular edema and subsequent visual loss. Regulation of systemic risk factors is important in the treatment of diabe- tic macular edema (DME). In addition, macular laser photocoa- gulation, intravitreal corticostreoids and frequently intravitreal anti vascular endothelial growth factors are often performed for the treatment of DME. Some patients have vitreomacular inter- face abnormalities such as vitreomacular traction or epiretinal membrane. In eyes with DME and vitreomacular traction or epi- retinal membran, successful results can be achieved with pars plana virectomy (PPV) ± internal limiting membrane (ILM) re- moval. However, PPV ± ILM removal is contraversial in eyes with DME and without vitreomacular interface abnormalities. Pros- pective randomized comparative studies are needed for a reliable conclusion.
