Abstract

Forty patients (32 women, 8 men) with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) in upper extremity, admitted to Erciyes University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, were included in this study in order to emphasize the importance of stellate ganglion blockade (SGB) by ultrasound added to physical therapy. Physical therapy was applied on 20 patients and physical therapy+SGB by ultrasound with 0.5 watt/$cm^2$ doses for 5 minutes was applied on the other 20 patients. Physical therapy included hot-pack/cold-pack, paraffin bath, massage, active-assistive ROM exercise and streching exercise under pain threshold to improve the limitation. Before treament, there were no différencies between two groups in the mean ages and the parameters like shoulder abduction, wrist flexion and extention and visual analog scale, except shoulder flexion. In two groups, significant improvement was detected in all parameters after treatment. SGB was founded more effective than physical therapy in pain management. That's why, we concluded that SGB by ultrasound added to physical therapy of the patients with RSD was also useful.
