Abstract

The subject of this article is the interpretation of Kara Walker’s work titled ”The End of Uncle Tom and Grand Allegorical Tableau of Eva in Heaven, which she visualized based on Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. The artist, by transforming the characters of the novel, moved them into another platform; and visualized the expressions of race and sex in a provocative, harsh and ironic way. Walker thinks that racism is not only time in history but it continues today and there is a danger of transferring it into future, therefore, she thinks that what happened in the past should not be forgotten; and she reflects this through her art. For this purpose, often based on narratives and literary texts, with her metaphoric and ironic expression, in the context of anti-racism, she creates works that are intriguing and make spectators think. With a strategic choice, the artist has developed a striking, visual narrative way, full of simple but intense content, with shadow installations she created from cut paper. Violent scenes have been transformed into expressible and viewable form through shadow figures.
