Abstract

Objective: To assess the incidence of nuchal cord in the second trimester of pregnancy for gestational week, and for influencing factors. Methods: The fetal neck was visualized by color Doppler ultrasonography in 184 singleton fetuses at the second trimester of pregnancy. The entanglement of 270 degree or more was accepted as nuchal cord. The relationship between the incidence of nuchal cord and gestational week, fetal presentation, placental location and fetal sex was investigated prospectively. Chi square, T and Spearman tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: The incidence of nuchal cord was found in 13% of the cases (24/184). It was found 11% on 16-24 gestational weeks and 28% after 25-27 gestational weeks (p<0.05). Anterior placentation was found more frequent than other localisations in nuchal cords (p<0.01). There was no statistical relationship between nuchal cord and fetal sex and fetal presentation. Conclusion: Nuchal coiling of the umbilical cord may be present in 13% of the cases during sonographic evaluation at the second trimester of the pregnancy. Advancing gestational ages and anterior placentation were found in relationship with nuchal cord, while fetal sex and presentation were not.
