Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate nonenzymatic endogenous antioxidant (ferritin) levels in patients with preeclampsia and in normotensive healthy pregnant women. Methods: In a prospective study design, 83 preeclamptic women and 30 control patients without systemic disease were included in the study at the Yüzüncü Y›l University Medical Faculty, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. None of the patients had taken iron supplementation. Hemoglobin, hematocrit, and ferritin levels were measured. Serum ferritin concentration was measured by L2KFE2 kitts (IMMULITE 2000, DPC, Los Angeles/USA). Results: There were no differences in the hemoglobin and hematocrit levels among the two groups. A significant difference was observed in the serum ferritin concentration between study and control groups [80 (12.5-1039) ng/ml vs 11.5 (1-45.6) ng/ml]. Conclusions: Our study has shown a significant difference in serum ferritin levels between the preeclamptic and normal pregnant patients.
