Abstract

Aim: Right ventricular (RV) systolic dysfunction plays an important role in the prognosis and survival of mitral stenosis (MS) patients, but effects of subclinical RV impairment is unknown. The aim of the study was to investigate the role of M-mode and tissue Doppler echocardiography for the evaluation of subclinical RV dysfunction. Material andMethod: The study population was comprised of 45 patients withmild tomoderateMS and 21 healthy controls, all in sinus rhythm. From the apical four-chamber view, through the lateral tricuspid annulus, systolic (S) wave velocity and myocardial performance index (MPI) was assessed by tissue Doppler andM-mode was used to obtain tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE). Results: TAPSE and tricuspid S wave velocity (p<0.0001) were significantly lower and MPI (p=0.04) was higher in MS patients compared with healthy controls. While left atrium diameter and pulmonary artery systolic pressure had a negative significant correlation with the tricuspid S wave velocity and TAPSE, a significant direct correlation was found with the MPI. Conclusions: In patients with mild to moderate MS, M-mode and tissue Doppler echocardiography could be used to determine subclinical RV dysfunction.
