Abstract

AIM: The purpose of this study was to present our experience in female gender who underwent coronary bypass surgery, looking over to the discussion in the literature in terms of the early risks. 4 through September, 1998, 80 women had undergone coronary bypass surgery at our clinic. Mean age of these patients was 58.4. Preoperative angiographic study revealed left main coronary disease in 3 patients (3.8 %), 3 vessel disease in 35 patients (43.7 %), 2 vessel disease in 29 patients (36.2 %), and single vessel disease in 13 patients (16.3 %). Associated cardiovascular anomalies consisted of rheumatic mitral valve disease in 2 patients, and left ventricular aneurysm in 9 patients. Redo coronary bypass was performed on in one patient. Coronary bypass surgery was performed on with standard cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), whereas in 17 cases the operation was made without CPB with the heart healing. RESULTS: Mean distal anastomosis was 2.5. Mean cross-clamp time and perfusion time in open-heart patients was 48 and 92 minutes respectively. Aneurysmectomy in 9 patients. Single or multiple endarterectomy in 14 patients, and mitral valve replacement in 2 patients was made as an associated procedure. Hospital mortality was determined as 8.7 %, with 7 cases. Vast majority cause of mortality was low cardiac output (57 %), Mediastinitis in 1 patient (1.2 %), reexploration for bleeding in 3 patients (3.7 %), perioperative myocardial infarction in 4 patients (5 %) was noted as major complications. CONCLUSION: Female gender has been mentioned as a risk factor in the early period after coronary bypass surgery by several studies. Our experience shows similar results with these studies. However, the risks in the early postoperative period can he accepted as tolerable.
