Abstract

Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of valve replacement on left ventricular function, structure and exercise capacity in patients with chronic mitral and aortic regurgitation. Material and Method: The study population consisted of 25 patients, who were planned to undergo valve replacement due to at least moderate to severe chronic mitral or aortic regurgitation. This included 12 men and 13 woman with an average age of 36±15 years. Transthoracic echocardiography was performed on all patients using a Hewlett-Packard Sonos 1500 instrument with a 2.5-3.5 MHz phased array transducer. All echocardiographic measurements and exercise tests were performed before and 6 months after the valve replacement. Results: Left ventricular end systolic diameter (4.36±0.70 cm vs. 3.56±0.73 cm, before and after operation, respectively; p<0.001), left ventricular end diastolic diameter (6.48±0.69 cm vs. 5.16±0.77 cm, before and after operation, respectively; p<0.001), interventricular septum amplitude (1.09±0.34 cm vs. 0.60±0.27 cm, before and after operation, respectively; p<0.001), and left ventricular end systolic volume (85±29 cm3 vs. 58±20 cm3, before and after operation, respectively; p<0.001), were found to be decreased, while there was an increase in the exercise capacity (6.04±2.07 MET vs. 8.40±2.23 MET, before and after operation, respectively; p<0.001). Conclusion: Despite the decrease in interventricular septal motion, there is an improvement in left ventricular function, structure and exercise capacity after valve replacement.
