Abstract

Diastolic dysfunction is defined as the requirement for elevated filling pressures to maintain cardiac output. Augmented filling pressures may result in excessive cardiac volume and right-sided or leftsided congestion, the syndrome of diastolic heart failure. There are two common disorders that cause diastolic dysfunction: 1) restrictive cardiomyopathy, 2) constrictive pericarditis. Differentiation of restrictive cardiomyopathy and constrictive pericarditis is essential because of the potential to relieve constrictive pericarditis effectively with surgical pericardiectomy. In this review characteristics of constrictive pericarditis and restrictive cardiomyopathy, differential diagnosis and mixed physiology were discussed according to current knowletge.
