Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the epicardial fat tissue thickness and aortic stiffness in patients with cardiac syndrome X. Material and Method: This prospective study included 85 patients with typical anginal symptoms and a positive exercise stress test or ischemia in myocardial perfusion scintigraphy and normal coronary arteries detected angiographically, and 85 otherwise healthy subjects with a negative stress test for ischemia. Epicardial fat tissue, aortic stiffness index and aortic distensibility were calculated echocardiographically. The results of two groups were compared to each other. Results: Age, gender, and body mass index were similar between the groups. Aortic stiffness index was higher in cardiac syndrome X patients compared to healthy individuals (2.44±0.33 and 3.75±0.53, p<0.001). Also, aortic distensibility was lower in cardiac syndrome X patients than those with control groups (2.98±1.24 and 5.31±2.82, p<0.001). Epicardial fat tissue thickness was significantly higher in the cardiac syndrome X group than in the control group (0.66±0.21 cm and 0.46±0.38 cm respectively, p<0.001). Patients with diagnosis of cardiac syndrome X had significantly higher serum C-reactive protein levels than the control group (p<0.001). Conclusion: Aortic stiffness and epicardial fat tissue thickness were found to be increased in patients diagnosed with cardiac syndrome X.
