Abstract

AIM: The purpose of this study is to predict the rate of recoarctation after surgical correction in long term follow up. METHODS: We present 32 coarctation patients which we operated in Siyami Ersek Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Center between the years 1972 and 1988. Twenty three patients (71.8%) were male, 9 (28.2%) were female and mean age was about 18.06 years. In our study, the criteria of the recoarctation is a mean gradient above 20 mmHg at rest. After 5.5 year follow-up period, we evaluated patients with transthoracic Doppler echocardiography. RESULTS: We found that the mean gradient was below 20 mmHg in 28 patients (87.5%) and the mean gradient was above 20 mmHg only in 4 patients (12.5%). CONCLUSIONS: Recoarctation of the aorta is a multifactorial event and can be seen after all surgical techniques. Recoarctation depends on the age of patient at the surgery, the size of coarctated segment and resection of all segment of the coarctation. We concluded that in the postoperative follow up period of the aortic coarctation patients, transthoracic echocardiography is a cost effective, easy and accurate technique.
