Abstract

AIM: To investigate Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP) as a risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD). METHOD: In this study 90 patients who had undergone coronary angiography with initial diagnosis of CAD were investigated. Just before left ventriculography, ventricle blood was taken from the patients and the relationship between CAD and CP seroactivity (IgG, IgM and IgA) was examined. For this reason the patients were separated into 3 groups who have 1, 2 and 3 vessel lesions and the results were compared with the group who have normal coronary angiography. RESULTS: 21 patients had I vessel, 23 had 2 vessel and 24 had 3 vessel disease. The control group consisted of 22 people. When the group with normal coronary arteries were compared with the groups of 1, 2 and 3 vessel .lesions, no statistically meaningful difference was obtained considering CP, IgG, IgM and IgA antibody response (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: In this study CP positivity didn't show any difference between the control group and coronary angiographically proven CAD group which suggested that CP infection was not an independent risk factor for CAD.
