Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to seek the frequency of Mycoplasma pneumoniae antibody seropositivity in patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and to seek whether the PCI cause an increase in antibody levels in those patients. Material and Method: Consecutive 19 male, 4 female, total 23 patients (mean age 56.9±8.8) with stable angina, unstable angina, or acute myocardial infarction who underwent PCI, were included in the study. M. Pneumoniae IgA, IgG, and IgM antibody levels were measured by using solid phase enzyme immunoassay (EIA) test before and one month after PCI. Results: PCI was successfully performed in all study patients. IgA, IgG and IgM antibody levels were measured as 9.8±7.4, 71.9±31, 0.07±0.11 U/L before the intervention, and 11.2±6.6, 80±29, 0.06±0.09 U/L, respectively, at the first month follow-up, (p: NS for all antibodies). IgA was positive in 5 patients (%21.7), IgG was positive in 10 patients (%43.4), and IgM was negative in all patients before the intervention. The total number of the patients with positive antibody was 11 (%47.8). At first month follow-up IgA was positive in 7 patients (%30.4), and IgG was positive in 11 patients (%47.8). IgM was again negative in all patients. The clinical and angiographic characteristics were not different between the patients with and without pre-procedural IgG seopositivity (previous infection). There was also no a significant antibody increase when the pre-procedural and first month antibody levels compared within each group. Conclusion: Although antibody seropositivity was observed in a significant portion of the study patients, M pneumoniae may not be a responsible microorganism in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease, and may not be present in atherosclerotic plaque, or may present in athersoclerotic plaques, but cannot generate an immune response following PCI.
