Abstract

Aim:We aimed to investigate whether there is an association between slow coronary flow (SCF) and markers of platelet function which are mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribuiton width (PDW) and platelet count in patients with angiographically proven SCF. Material and Method: 123 consecutive patients with angiographically proven SCF and 64 subjects with normal coronary angiograms were included into the study between April 2006 and December 2008. Thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame count was used in order for detection of SCF. The relationship between MPV, PDW, platelet count and SCF were sought. Results: The two groups were comparable in terms of age, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, triglyceride levels, white blood cell count, history of hypertension and diabetes. However MPV (p=0.024), PDW (p=0.007), platelet count (p=0.004), gender (p=0.025), and smoking ratio (p=0.02) were significantly different between groups. MPV (r=0.150, p=0.049) and PDW (r=0.216, p=0.005), were positively but platelet count (r=-0.241, p=0.001) was negatively correlated with SCF. In multivariate analysis, MPV (β=0.229 p=0.007, %95 CI=0.016-0.131),PDW (β=0.552, p=0.001, %95 CI=0.068-0.130) and smoking (β=0.174 p=0.048, %95 CI=0.025-0.389) were independent predictors of SCF. Conclusion: Results of this study revealed that SCF may be associated with markers of platelet actiation such as MPV and PDW. The MPV and PDW are easily measured during a routine CBC. The results of the current study suggest that SCF is an indicator of increased platelet activation and aggregation, and can be considered as a marker for increased thrombotic activity. The value of antithrombotic therapies in patients with SCF needs to be evaluated in further studies.
