Abstract

The change in how society views women was followed by the medical field, and opened the gateway to a new science: gender-specific medicine. New research described differences between women and men in epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, therapy and outcomes. However, gender bias in medical field still continues, in both clinical and scientific settings. Currently, cardiovascular diseases lead to high rates of disease-related morbidity and mortality, and even though the differences between genders are well described on this topic, they are still seen as the “disease of men.” Therefore, as in all other areas, increasing the number of gender-specific research and more importantly, increasing the awareness of health care personnel about cardiovascular diseases and gender are essential. In this review, cardiovascular diseases like ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, heart failure, cardiomyopathies, hypertension, dyslipidemia, aortic valve stenosis, mitral valve prolapse, mitral regurgitation; and the differences between women and men in clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment are included. Differences of hormonal systems and pharmacological therapies are also mentioned.
