Abstract

AIM: Restenosis remains a major limitation to percutaneous revascularization. Stents reduce angiographic restenosis in comparison with balloon angioplasty. Patients with diabetes mellitus have a greater incidence of restenosis. The purpose of the present study is to compare restenosis patterns of patients with and those without diabetes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between November 1997 and December 1998, 285 patients underwent coronary stenting and control angiography. Eighty five were diabetic. In-stent restenosis rate was significantly higher in diabetic than nondiabetic patients (51.8% vs 26.5%, p=0.0002). We evaluated angiographic classification of in-stent restenosis. according to the geographic distribution of intimal hyperplasia in reference to implanted stent. Patterns include focal, diffuse and total occlusion. The stent size and length were similar between groups. There was no observed difference in the vessel treated and stent types in both groups. CONCLUSION: Restenosis patterns did not differ between the patients with and without diabetes mellitus.
