Abstract

AIM: We compared the clinic and angiographic findings between the cases of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) with unstable angina pectoris (USAP) and the cases free of DM but with USAP. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have taken 100 cases 71 males and 29 females without a previous myocardial infarction (MI) history who attended to our clinic with the symptoms of USAP. This group is divided into two divisions: the ones with DM (group I) and the ones without DM (group II). Coronary angiography and left ventriculography were applied to the all of the cases. A narrowing over 70 % in a coronary artery was considered as critical and responsible from the clinical outcome. The cases were evaluated for risk factors, angiographical findings and revascularization options. RESULTS: Group I was composed of 30 males(61%), 19 females(39%); group II was composed of 41 males(81%), 10 females(19%). In the first group, the number of females were significantly higher (p=0.03) and in the second group smoking rate was higher(p=0.02). In group I; 24 (48.%) of the cases had a three vessel disease, 10(%21) had one vessel disease and in group II; of them 26(52%) had a single vessel disease and 13 (25%) had a three vessel disease (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: While three vessel disease is quite often in cases with USAP and DM, a single vessel disease was less commonly seen. For this reason we have to be much more careful when diagnosing and treating cases with USAP and DM, and the coronary artery anatomies of these cases must be evaluated in an early stage clearly.
