Abstract

AIM: Distensibility is one of the most important characteristic features of arterial system and changes in this parameter may have significant effects on cardiovascular functions. In this study we investigated arterial compliance and the distensibility characteristics effects of ultrafiltration among distensibilty in patient receiving hemodialysis. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Ten normotensive patients (mean age 41.0±16.3 years) receiving hemodialysis and 10 healthy subjects (mean age 37.1±11.8 years) as the control group were enrolled in the study. Arterial distensiblity calculations were performed using pulse wave velocity values. These measurements were made by using a Complior apparatus on carotis and femoral arteries. RESULTS: Both pulse pressures and pulse wave velocities were significantly increased in patients receiving hemodialysis then the control group (p=0.001, p=0.03 respectively). A significant decrease in systolic blood pressures and body weight were detected (p=0.37, p=0.05, p=0.01 respectively). While pulse wave velocity value measured before and after ultrafiltration didn't significantly changed CONCLUSION: Pulse wave velocity is found to be increased in patients receiving hemodialysis which was stated as an indicator of cardiovascular disease risk and we observed that the ultrafiltration had no significant effect on arterial distensibilty.
