Abstract

Aim: In addition to reducing sudden cardiac death and total mortality, it is important to determine the influence of cardioverter/defibrillator (ICD) implantation on quality of life and cardiac morbidity. Thus causes of hospital readmission and therapeutic approaches had been studied in these patients. Material and Methods: We retrospectively studied 68 patients (60 male, median age 57.2±9.1 years and 8 female, median age 59.2±12.5 years) who underwent cardioverter/defibrillator implantation in our institution between 1991 and 2001. Mean duration of follow-up was 28±21 months. Results: There were 49 readmissions in 32(40%) of patients. One readmission in 18, two readmission in 11 and three readmission in 3 patients were determined. 6(%8.8) patients died during the follow-up period. Causes of rehospitalization were multiple appropriate shock (34.6%), inappropriate shock (10.1%), ventricular tachycardia (8.1%), heart failure (20.4%), myocardial ischemia (10.2%), battery depletion (14.2%) and pocket hematoma (1.4%). Conclusion: The rate of hospital readmission was 40% in ICD patients. The majority of readmissions is caused by multiple appropriate shock treatments, heart failure and battery depletion. Further studies are needed to systematically investigate strategies for the prevention of rehospitalization in these patients.
